A boiling water tap keeps two to seven litres of water at or near 100°C under your sink, all day, every day. That is wonderful for tea and terrible for limescale, because a hot, still tank is the fastest place in your house for calcium carbonate to settle out. The tap you should buy depends less on the brand than on a number your water company already publishes: the hardness of your supply.

Before you spend £300 to £1,500, check your hardness
Enter your postcode for the hardness reading in your supply zone. Under 120 mg/L, any of these taps will run for years on its standard filter. Over 250 mg/L, budget for frequent cartridges or a softener, and ask the maker for its hardness limit in writing.
How a boiling water tap works
Three parts. A tank under the sink, insulated and electrically heated, holding water at 98 to 100°C. A filter cartridge on the cold feed into the tank. And the tap itself, which on most systems is a mixer with a separate, child-safe boiling lever. Open the lever and the tank pushes water up to the spout, refilling from the mains behind it. The tank takes 10 to 20 minutes to heat from cold and then sips electricity to stay there.

Why the filter matters more than the spout
The cartridge does two jobs. It takes chlorine and particles out so the boiling water tastes clean, and, on most systems, it reduces the minerals that become limescale. Because the tank is hot and still, any hardness that gets past the filter drops out inside the tank rather than in your cup. Once the element is coated, heating slows, the thermostat works harder and the tank eventually fails. That is why every maker ties its warranty to changing the cartridge on time.

What hard water does to a boiling tap
Your water company reports hardness as milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre. Our postcode pages use five bands: soft under 60, moderately soft to 120, moderately hard to 180, hard to 250, and very hard above that. London, Kent, Essex, East Anglia and Oxfordshire sit almost entirely in the top band. In those areas a boiling tap without a working filter can scale its tank in months, and the symptoms are a slower flow, spitting at the spout and a tank that takes longer to recover between cups.
None of the five makers publishes a plain mg/L limit on the pages we could read, so the honest advice is: find your hardness below, then ask the maker for its hardness limit and the filter interval at that hardness before you order. Above 250 mg/L, a whole-house softener is the only thing that protects the tank rather than slowing the damage. Quooker states its taps accept softened water within conditions. Quooker's FAQ says the HiTAC filter in the tank improves taste and “isn’t a limescale filter”. In hard water it advises soaking the aerator in white vinegar; scale inside the tank needs a maintenance kit or a service. It accepts softened water if the pH is 6.5 to 9.5, there is no excess salt and pressure is 2 bar or more.

Is a Quooker really 100°C?
Yes. Quooker's own FAQ states boiling water is dispensed at 100°C; the tank stores it above boiling under slight pressure. Qettle also stores at 100°C. Fohen and Hanstrom dispense at 98°C, and the InSinkErator HOT150 dispenser delivers near-boiling water at around 98°C. For tea and coffee the difference is imperceptible; for sterilising or some recipes it matters.
Can I fit a boiling water tap myself?
The plumbing is push-fit and within reach of a confident DIYer, but the tank needs a mains socket under the sink and the tap needs a suitable hole in the worktop. Most buyers use a plumber, and some warranties expect professional installation. Allow £150 to £300 for fitting on top of the tap.
